Below street level on St George’s Lane, steps from Monument station and Lloyd’s of London. One basement, one room, one atmosphere, set differently for every occasion.
Steam is a basement venue. That is not a disclaimer, it is the whole point.
We are below street level on St George’s Lane, a one minute walk from Monument and five from Bank. The basement setting gives every event an intimacy you can’t buy on a rooftop. The lighting is warm, the walls are close, and the room feels different at six in the evening than it does at noon.
Steam works because of what it is, not how it’s divided. The same flowing space that hosts a celebrity lunch for ninety becomes an evening reception for one hundred and fifty. The configuration changes. The atmosphere doesn’t.
The room runs from the entrance through to a raised stage area at the back, where speakers stand for the lunches and where bands set up on music nights. There are no walls inside Steam, just one continuous basement with the lighting set to match the occasion.
Whole-venue capacity. The configuration shifts to suit the event.

The main seated space. This is where the celebrity lunches happen, where the City turns up in twos, fours and eights, where the wine flows properly and the conversation outlasts the courses.
Long communal tables, round tables of six, and a chef’s counter for the smaller party. The room is set differently for a Cheltenham lunch than it is for a monthly boardroom dinner, and we will reset it for your event.
The back of the bar steps up to a small raised area. It is part of the room, not a separate space, but it is where the focal point of the event sits. Speakers stand there for the lunches. Bands set up there on music nights. Comics work to it. It gives the room something to face.
When the diary is quiet, the stage area is simply the back of the bar, with a few high tables and the same wine list as everywhere else in the room. When an event is on, it is the centre of attention.
One St George’s Lane is tucked between Eastcheap and Gracechurch Street, on the south side of the Monument/Bank corridor.
Monument, two minutes on foot.
Bank, five minutes.
Fenchurch Street, three minutes.
Liverpool Street, ten minutes if you walk briskly.
Drop off point is on Eastcheap, then a short walk down St George’s Lane. Give the driver the EC3R 8DJ postcode, or just “opposite the Walkie Talkie” and they will know.
Steam is below street level. The entrance is the black door at number one. Ring the bell during the day and walk straight down the stairs in the evening. Event host will meet you.
Steam is a basement venue reached by a single flight of stairs. We do not currently have step-free access. If that is a concern for you or a guest, please email us directly before booking and we will do everything we can to accommodate, including bespoke arrangements for specific events.
